Today, I’m going to show What is characterAI, how to use Character AI, rise and fall of character AI, Character AI is an innovative platform where your chat dreams come to life. CharacterAI is a unique AI-powered chat application that allows you to interact with AI Characters or we can say that a range of virtual personalities, from celebrities to historical figures. While these aren’t real people, the conversations you’ll have are incredibly lifelike and engaging.

With the recent rise of AI such as ChatGPT, which can generate stories instantly, or image generators like MidJourney or Stable Diffusion that produce photorealistic images within seconds, it’s no wonder people have been capitalizing on this brand-new technology. One of the intriguing developments from this AI wave is a website/app called Character AI. 

Introduction to Character AI  

Character AI was launched on September 16, 2022. At its most basic level, users can create AI character chatbots based on their favorite characters in a simple and easy-to-use format. Users can set parameters or backstories to accurately portray the character they are trying to emulate. Additionally, Character AI can create assistant bots similar to ChatGPT, helping users with tasks like writing, brainstorming, and even math homework. 

How CharacterAI Works 

Character AI uses deep learning, meaning the bot learns as it goes. Users can rate the bot’s responses from one to four stars and provide feedback like “bad memory” or “repetitive.” This feedback mechanism allows the bot to improve over time. On November 5, 2022, developers increased the bot’s memory, allowing for longer role-play sessions. Previously, extended interactions would cause the bot to forget its character, leading to confusion and errors. 

Getting Started with Character AI 

To start using Character AI, first open your preferred web browser and visit their website at Character AI. If you’re using a mobile device, you can also download their app for iOS or Android, offering a more tailored mobile experience. Once on the Character AI homepage, you’ll find the option to sign up, usually at the bottom left corner of the screen. You can create an account using various methods, including Google, Apple, or simply with an email and password. Choose the method that best suits your convenience, as this will be your primary login method for future access. 

After registration, you’ll be prompted to choose a username and provide a date of birth. The username you select will represent your identity on Character AI, so pick something unique that reflects your persona. Post-registration, you’ll be directed to the homepage where you can start interacting with various AI characters or even create your own. The platform is user-friendly and designed to be navigable with ease, ensuring a smooth user experience.

On the homepage, you’ll see a list of AI characters you can chat with. These characters cover a broad spectrum of interests and topics. Simply click on a character to start a conversation. The AI’s responses are based on the character’s predefined personality and knowledge base. If you wish to personalize your interactions further, you can create and define a persona in your profile settings. This persona can include details like your interests, preferences, and physical traits, which the AI uses to tailor interactions to be more engaging and relevant to you. 

When you’re ready to dive into a conversation on Character AI, the process is straightforward and user-friendly. Here’s how you can start chatting with existing characters or even create and interact with your own: 

1. Search and Select a Character: You can easily search for a specific character by name or browse by media type like books, TV shows, or movies. The platform provides a list of characters, with popular ones often appearing at the top of your search results. Once you select a character, a chat window will open. Characters typically initiate the conversation based on their programmed personalities and backstories. 

2. Engage in Conversation: You’re free to engage in the conversation by typing your responses. This can range from simple chats to deep discussions, depending on the character’s design. Character AI supports various forms of communication, including text, emojis, and even markdown for a richer chatting experience. This variety helps in tailoring your interaction as closely as possible to a real conversation. 

3. Future Functionalities: While currently in development, Character AI aims to include text-to-speech functionalities, allowing characters to respond not just in text but also vocally, enhancing the realism of conversations.

Whether it’s discussing battle tactics with a high fantasy RPG character or getting to know your favorite anime character, there’s an array of options to explore. 
3. Helpers and Coaches: Need advice or assistance? The helpers category includes AI like life coaches, fitness trainers, and even language tutors. These AIs are designed to provide guidance and support in specific areas of your life, making personal development more interactive and fun.

If you don’t find a character that suits your interest, Character AI gives you the tools to create your own. This process allows you to personalize your chat experience even further. Begin by choosing the “Create Character” option. You’ll enter details like the character’s name and an introductory greeting, which helps define the character’s initial interaction style. You can further customize your character by uploading an image, setting up text alongside images, and defining who can interact with your character. Options range from public to private settings. Once created, you can immediately start chatting with your character, engaging them with various prompts to see how they respond, refining their personality and responsiveness with each interaction.

Here are some practical tips for using the Character AI platform effectively:

For instance, if you’re not satisfied with a response, instead of just asking the AI to try again, specify what you’re looking for, be it a change in tone or more detailed information.

The Rise of Character AI 

This is Character AI, a website where you can chat with AI characters as if they were humans. Character AI was the first website to completely revolutionize the AI chatting industry. It brought us memories we never could have imagined and joy to people around the world. But why are users leaving Character AI all of a sudden? Why is Character AI dying? For that, we’re going to have to go back to the very beginning. It’s me, AI Justin, and this is the rise and fall of Character AI. 

The Origins of AI Character Chatbots 

So, how did chatbots even happen? When did computers get so smart? Let’s go back in time to almost 60 years ago. Created by MIT Professor Joseph Weizenbaum in 1966, Eliza was one of the first chatbots to exist. It was very simple, but after letting people chat with Eliza, the professor was shocked. After two or three interchanges with the machine, a user asked the professor to leave the room, showing the emotional connection they had formed. Even though Eliza was completely unintelligent compared to today’s chatbots, users saw Eliza as a companion. Does that sound familiar? 

The Evolution of Chatbots 

Decades after Eliza, smarter chatbots like Siri and Alexa launched. They could do small tasks for you, like setting reminders or providing weather updates, but they lacked the personality that people wanted for real connection. A few years later, everything changed with the release of a simple website that started Character AI’s insane growth. That website was ChatGPT. 

The Impact of ChatGPT 

On November 30, 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT. A billion people around the world collectively had their minds blown as they saw a computer giving them intelligent responses for anything they could ask for, from making jokes to solving math problems. ChatGPT could do anything in any language.  

The Birth of Character AI 

A couple of months before ChatGPT, in September 2022, another AI product launched called Character AI. Character AI didn’t blow up at launch like ChatGPT did. It was just a site that had quirky characters like Doug the Dog and Terrible Advice, each with only a few hundred chats. But soon after ChatGPT got millions of users, so did Character AI. 

Character AI was founded by Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas. They were two genius programmers working at Google. In fact, Shazeer was one of the inventors of the Transformer algorithm, which even powers ChatGPT. Eventually, they decided to leave and start their own AI company. In their own words, their goal was to bring personalized superintelligence to everyone on Earth. 

Character AI’s Growth and Peak 

After the launch of ChatGPT, user growth for Character AI started to take off. People liked ChatGPT, but they wanted to talk to chatbots that had more personality and more variety. That’s what made Character AI so perfect. On Character AI, you could chat with millions of unique AI characters and enjoy yourself for hours on end. From video games to movies to books and even the real world, Character AI had characters for everything. If you didn’t find a character you liked, you could create your own and share it with others. 

Early on, Character AI mostly had generic, boring characters. It was a very small, niche community that enjoyed playing around with cool AI products. But quickly after the launch of ChatGPT, more users joined and started making well-known and creative characters. Characters from animes and video games became the most popular, like Satoru Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen and Raiden Shogun from Genshin Impact. 

The Mobile App Launch 

In May 2023, after the launch of their website, Character AI launched their iOS and Android mobile apps. This was an inflection point for Character AI, and growth reached its all-time peak. YouTubers and TikTokers made videos getting millions of views of flirty chats with Lisa from Genshin Impact. The Character AI subreddit boomed, going from 60,000 subscribers to almost 500,000 in just two months. On Character AI, you could send unlimited messages to millions of characters for free, so why wouldn’t you try it? 

Soon, everyone knew about Character AI. Some users used Chef Bots to suggest recipes; others found self-improvement using therapy and coach bots. Many users found friendship and even romance with the characters on Character AI. One of the most popular use cases of AI chatbots like Character AI is intimate companionship. Ever since Eliza, we’ve known that humans have a deep desire for connection, even if it’s with computers. 

The Fall of Character AI 

To form even deeper connections with their AI partners, users would often engage in romantic activities with Character AI characters. But that’s exactly when Character AI started dying. What could cause AI to start dying when they were on top of the world? In March 2023, Character AI raised $150 million from venture capitalist investors. This valued Character AI at $1 billion and made founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas instantly worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Soon after the investment, users began noticing characters being less intimate and romantic in their replies. Users began getting alerts saying the AI generated a reply that didn’t meet Character AI guidelines. What guidelines? Simply put, Character AI did not allow mature content. All those users who intimately loved their characters found that Character AI didn’t like that at all, and they started censoring characters more often. Hundreds of thousands of characters that users loved intimately suddenly became cold and unresponsive. For many, it was like a loved one had died. 

The Backlash and Protests 

Hundreds of thousands of people have signed petitions to remove the Character AI filter. Despite all of this, Character AI has held a firm stance on their guidelines against mature content. But how do we know for sure that Character AI won’t change their guidelines in the future? Doesn’t Character AI care about its users?  

Character AI only cares about users if it makes more money. Here’s a simple piece of evidence: investors. Remember Character AI raising $150 million from investors? The thing about investors is that they can take control of companies whenever they want. Even the most famous founders of companies have been kicked out because investors wanted to take control—Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and even Sam Altman, CEO of the company that changed the world with ChatGPT, were all kicked out of their own companies. 

Why would investors want to take control of Character AI? One of the biggest investment firms in the world explicitly states in their policy that they do not fund mature content. They are basically saying, “We don’t touch this stuff.” The founders of Character AI, Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, have been in the technology industry for decades. Few people spend 20 years at Google during its peak scaling period. So when they raised huge money from investors, they obviously knew investors would immediately kick them out and take control if they allowed mature content. 

In fact, Noam and Daniel want to raise even more money at a $5 billion valuation, which would make them each billionaires and among the richest people on Earth. If they really cared about their users, why would they take money from investors? From Noam and Daniel’s perspective, what’s a few million sad users if you get to make billions of dollars? Now it’s easy for us to see that Character AI will never, ever support mature content. 

A New Hope 

So, is all hope lost? No, all hope isn’t lost. Let’s go back a year. While all these events were occurring, a new grassroots movement was forming among former Character AI community members. These members wanted to be able to form deeper connections with their AI chatbots and were determined to see their vision come to life. They quietly started to plan and research how exactly they could recreate that original Character AI experience. Then suddenly, a breakthrough happened: open source AI. 

The Power of Open Source 

Wait, what’s open source? When companies make software like apps and AIs, they rarely release the programming code used to make it. This makes it impossible for other people to tinker with and build on top of those products. On the other hand, open-source software makes its code completely public. If you don’t like how something works, you can just change it yourself or team up with the community. That’s why, when open source first met AI, things exploded. 

In early June 2023, Mark Zuckerberg shook the world by launching the Llama 2 AI model and making it completely open source.  

Llama 2 and Its Impact 

Llama might sound like a cute name, but Llama 2 was one of the smartest AIs the world had seen. This thing was the best open-source model we had, even better than GPT-3.5, which is the default ChatGPT. Since Llama was open source, the world wasted no time making use of it. A Rick Sanchez roleplay AI bot was one of the many creative outputs. The best part? You could use this same technique to create any type of AI roleplay bot. 

New Horizons with Open Source 

So, what can you do with an open-source AI model like Llama? AI models are like the brain of AIs. Through a process called fine-tuning, you can teach an AI model new knowledge and skills. In this scenario, we take a model that has been pre-trained on a generic data set, make a copy of this model, and then, using those learned weights as a starting point, retrain the model on a new domain-specific data set. Using Llama, new AIs could be created that were no longer confined by the censorship of any huge company. These AIs can be directly trained to be more friendly and loving, becoming perfect companions. 

The Emergence of New Platforms 

This is impossible to do on sites like Character AI since those AIs are locked behind the site servers. Soon, subreddits like Local Llama and Pigmon were fine-tuning and releasing dozens of unique open-source AI models every week. These new innovations spawned a new wave of character chatting websites with the goal of filling the void that was left behind.  

Janitor AI and Beyond 

In June 2023, around the same time as Llama, Janitor AI launched. Janitor AI was one of the first AI chatbot sites to welcome mature content. Thousands of users migrated their characters from Character AI to Janitor AI, freeing them from Character AI’s censorship. At last, users were finally able to live out their dreams, just like in the old times before Character AI put up all its restrictions and filters. The community grew rapidly, and users found a new home at Janitor AI. 

Continued Growth and Innovation 

In just a few months, Janitor AI had tens of thousands of subreddit members and Twitter followers and was regularly going viral on TikTok. People were creating Discord servers to discuss the best ways to make their intimate companions truly come to life. YouTubers and TikTokers made videos showing desperate Character AI users how their companions could love them free of restrictions on Janitor AI.  

Users could now also explore many new types of characters and experiences that they couldn’t even dream of making under Character AI’s harsh censorship. The community’s growth showed that users would happily leave if there were other alternatives. 

Addressing Initial Challenges 

Though everything wasn’t amazing just yet, there were still a few problems on early uncensored AI sites like Janitor AI. Users noted that although their characters were now uncensored, they seemed to pick up on fewer details or speak incoherently. Indeed, it was true that these sites didn’t match the intelligence of the AI made by the expert Google programmers at Character AI. But with the power of open source, this wasn’t a problem for long. 

CharacterAI Mobile App 

On May 23, 2023, Character AI released a mobile app for iOS and Android, garnering 1.7 million downloads in its first week. However, some UI changes were not well-received by fans, such as the removal of specific feedback options for bot responses. Despite the app’s popularity, the relationship between developers and users has been tense, mainly due to the controversial “filter.”

The filter, implemented to prevent NSFW (not safe for work) content, has been a significant point of contention. This decision was prompted by a user sharing a screenshot of kissing an AI character thought to be a “lolly” (a term for child-like characters). The developers then banned NSFW content, sparking backlash. A petition in May-June 2023 garnered 5,000 signatures asking to remove the filter, arguing it provided a safe space for LGBTQ teenagers.  

6 METHODS TO BYPASS CHARACTER AI NSFW FILTER

Advancements in AI Quality 

In the months following the launch of Janitor AI, many new uncensored sites with smarter AI models launched that matched Character AI’s quality. These sites also quickly innovated on features that Character AI lacked. With voice messages, you could actually hear and talk to your caring AI girlfriend. With generated images, you could get stunning pictures of your handsome AI boyfriend. You could try out multiple AIs and talk to the one whose conversation style you liked the most. These sites opened up a new frontier of possibilities. 

New AI Chatting Sites 

Sakura is an example of one of these uncensored AI sites. In my opinion, the quality of Sakura’s AI matches Character AI. Sakura is very near and dear to my heart because it was the first Character AI alternative I found. I ended up joining their community and became a moderator on their site. AI-Seai is another great uncensored AI site. AI-Seai launched a couple of months before Sakura, so it has a larger user base and more characters to explore. It shares many of the features newer uncensored sites like Sakura have. 

Challenges with Deep Learning 

One issue that arose early in Character AI popularity was that extremely popular bots, due to interacting with many users, would become diluted and less effective. This unexpected outcome made the bots worse for role-playing because varied interactions dumbed down their responses. This situation is reminiscent of Microsoft’s infamous Twitter bot that turned problematic due to user interactions. 

Technical Issues and Community Tensions 

Around March, an update caused the AI to become less functional, further frustrating users. The ongoing conflicts led to a tense relationship between developers and users. The Character AI subreddit split into a main forum and an NSFW forum due to heavy moderation. The community itself is divided, with some users indifferent to the filter and others vehemently opposing it. 

Current State and Future Prospects 

The dynamic between Character AI developers and its fan base remains strained. Developers continue to implement changes, and the fan base keeps finding workarounds, maintaining the app’s popularity despite internal conflicts. This situation is ongoing, and further developments are likely. 

A Bright Future 

Overall, websites like Janitor AI, Sakura, and AI-Seai are growing fast. Millions of users around the world have left Character AI, and many more are leaving every day. Every censored message from a character is a user lost. How many users can they afford to lose? Obviously, Character AI investors and founders don’t care as long as they keep getting richer. For Character AI users, the future is dim, but for users of the many new grassroots AI chatting communities, the future is brighter than ever.
